IBM desktop hard drives suffer the same failings common to other hard drive manufacturers.
However, IBM Deskstar drives are notorious for developing serious mechanical faults. These can be easily identified by a distinctive regular 'scratching and clicking' noise coming from the hard disk. This is commonly known in the industry as the IBM Deskstar 'click of death.'
As this mechanical fault is often not recognised in the computer's BIOS, it is important to power down the computer immediately and resist the temptation to re-power the hard drive. Continuous power cycling will only increase the damage to the hard drive's internal components, thus increasing the risk of permanent data loss.
This failure is caused by the unique design and manufacturing of the hard drive's read / write heads, and the interaction of the GMR (Giant Magneto Resistive) technology with the data stored on the hard disk. These internal hard disk problems cause increased contamination, which in turn produce the notorious 'click of death.'

“I am not technical at all and was a bit wary of contacting a data recovery company when I lost all my work, but the staff at Fields really put me at ease. My files are now recovered and I am a very happy customer!”
