Hitachi hard drives suffer with similar failings to all other hard drive manufacturers.
As the Hitachi Deskstar hard drive is a re-branded version of the IBM Deskstar it suffers from the same failure as its IBM predecessor. These drives are notorious for developing serious mechanical failures. This failing can be easily identified by a distinctive regular "scratching or clicking" noise coming from the hard disk.
Often when the Hitachi hard drive develops a mechanical fault, it will not be recognised in the system's BIOS and it is important to power down the hard drive immediately and resist the temptation to re-power the hard drive. Continuous power cycling will increase the damage to the hard drive's internal components and increase the risk of permanent data loss. This fault is commonly known in the industry as the 'click of death'.
This failure is caused by this unique design and manufacturing of the hard drive's read / write heads and the interaction of the GMR (Giant Magneto Resistive) technology with the data stored on the hard disk. These internal problems within the hard disk cause increased contamination, which in turn produce the noise detailed above.
“I am not technical at all and was a bit wary of contacting a data recovery company when I lost all my work, but the staff at Fields really put me at ease. My files are now recovered and I am a very happy customer!”
